East Riding bin days move over Christmas. Last year normal rounds returned on 12 January. The 2026 dates, tip hours and tree collections, and where to check.
East Riding bin collection days change over Christmas and New Year, and the council has not yet published the 2026 dates. Last year it announced the changes on 4 December 2025 and normal collections came back on Monday 12 January 2026. The dates are set address by address, so the council’s lookup and its app are the only places your own revised days appear.
The quick answer
- 2026 revised dates: not published yet. The council’s Christmas 2026 service page says it will be filled in “during November and December 2026”.
- Last year: collections changed over the holidays and normal rounds resumed on Monday 12 January.
- Tips: last year they opened 10am to 5pm, closed at 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and were shut on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
What the council has published for 2026
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has set up a Christmas 2026 service information page for “opening times, bin collection dates and revised service information for front-line council services”. As of 25 September 2026 it carries no dates. The council says the page “will be updated regularly during November and December 2026, as teams from our services finalise their opening times”. We will update this page as soon as the bin dates appear.
What happened last Christmas
The council’s festive recycling guide, published on Thursday 4 December 2025, said:
- bin collection dates “will change over Christmas and New Year”
- normal collections resumed from Monday 12 January 2026
- the household waste recycling sites were open 10am to 5pm each day, closed at 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and closed all day on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day
- real Christmas trees could go next to the brown bin on its collection day in January, or to a tip, with lights and decorations removed
The council did not print a district-wide table of changed days. It sent people to its app and its bin collection dates lookup, because the change depends on your round. Expect the same approach this year.
Christmas is the heaviest time of year for the crews. The council said they collected 9,400 tonnes over the 2024 festive season, about 2,000 tonnes more than a normal month, and that more than 2,600 tonnes went to the ten tips in December 2024.
How to find your own Christmas bin days
- The East Riding of Yorkshire Council app. Add your address in the Waste Collections section and switch on reminders. The council says around 94,000 people already use it. It shows your next green, blue and brown bin days, including moved ones.
- The online lookup on the council’s bin collection dates page.
- The paper calendar delivered to homes, if yours is current.
Remember the colours: green is general rubbish, blue is recycling and brown is garden and food waste. Our bin collection days page explains the full system.
What goes where at Christmas
From the council’s 2025 guide:
- Blue bin: Christmas cards, envelopes, paper wrapping paper, cardboard and boxes, plastic tubs and trays, glass and plastic bottles and jars, cans, tins, aerosols, foil and foil trays, juice cartons. Everything loose, empty and clean, not in bags. If wrapping paper holds its shape when you scrunch it, it is paper and can go in. Remove sticky tape where you can.
- Brown bin: all food waste, cooked and uncooked, including the turkey carcass, bones, peelings, eggshells, tea bags and small amounts of sauce. Free caddy liners are available at tips, customer service centres, libraries and leisure centres.
- Green bin: polystyrene, which cannot be recycled, and crisp packets and plastic bags if your supermarket does not take them.
- Never in any bin: batteries, which cause fires. Take them to a supermarket collection point.
- Coffee pods, metal or plastic, go to a household waste recycling site.
Christmas trees
Last year the council took real trees next to the brown bin on its January collection day, with all lights and decorations removed, or at any of the ten household waste recycling sites. See our tip opening times page for the sites.
